Galboda Falls in Sri Lanka

Galboda Falls is a waterfall in Sri Lanka, located in the Nuwara Eliya District. It can be found along the railway track from Colombo to Badulla. The environment around Galboda Falls is cool with a lot of rain. The Galboda waterfalls, is 30 meters (98 feet) high, and its width ranges from 3 meters (9.8 feet) to 6 meters (20 feet), depending on the season. This Waterfalls is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the railway station. Since the area is close to Watawala, where the rainfall is high, Falls is ever young. The annual rainfall around Galboda Falls exceeds 4500 mm (177 inches), with 60% of the rain coming from the south-west monsoon. The dry season at Galboda Falls is from January to February.

Preparation

  • Research and book transportation: Since there is no proper road access to Galboda Falls, the most scenic and recommended way to get there is by train. You can catch a train from Kandy railway station. The Podi Menike train leaves at 8:42 am and arrives at Galboda station around 10:20 am. Alternatively, some tour operators offer day trips to Galboda Falls from Colombo, which include train rides and lunch.
  • Plan your stay: There are no hotels or guesthouses near Galboda Falls. The closest options are in Nawalapitiya, a town 18 kilometers away. Here you can find a range of budget hotels and guesthouses.
  • Pack accordingly: Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven terrain. Bring light, long-sleeved clothing and long pants to protect yourself from mosquitos and the sun. A hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent are also essential. You might also want to pack a swimsuit if you plan on getting close to the waterfall (be sure to check safety conditions first).

  • Facilities: There are no shops or restaurants near the falls, so be sure to bring your own food and drinks. There are basic toilets available at Galboda station.
