A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Recognizing its vital role in Sri Lanka’s ecological balance, UNESCO declared Sinharaja a World Heritage Site in 1989. The copious rain that often cloaks the forest acts as a lifeblood, nourishing the deep soils and ensuring a steady flow of water for much of southwestern Sri Lanka.

A Realm Defined by Nature

The Sinharaja Rainforest is bordered by two majestic rivers: the Koskulana Ganga to the north and the Gin Ganga to the south. An ancient footpath, tracing its way past the Beverley Estate, marks the eastern boundary near the forest’s highest peak, Hinipitigala, which towers at a height of 1171 meters. As you venture westward, the land gradually descends.

A Legacy of the Past

Encompassing 189 square kilometers of both pristine and secondary forest, Sinharaja stretches roughly 21 kilometers from east to west and 3.7 kilometers from north to south. Historical records hint at its former status as a royal reserve, even referencing it as Rajasinghe Forest. Some believe it might have been the final refuge for the elusive Sri Lankan lion, adding another layer of intrigue to this remarkable rainforest.

Entrance tickets for Sinharaja can be obtained at the main Forest Department office in Kudawa or at Deodawa, conveniently located 5 kilometers from Deniyaya on the Matara road.
